RESIDENTIAL RENOVATION | PROJECT SIMPSON
The Brief
The owners of this 70s brick abode wished to undertake a full scale renovation of their family home. The materials and fittings of the home were reminiscent of the 70s, multicoloured laminate benches in bright primary colours, well worn cork flooring and a good old kitchen with a corner pantry. The original brief was to update the home to give it more of a contemporary and refreshed feel to make it feel brighter but warm and welcoming, not too minimalist stark.
What we did...
While the flow of the home worked well, through initial discussions we identified there were some areas that could be addressed to better enhance the functionality within individual rooms. Particularly the kitchen, laundry and bathroom. The kitchen design was reconfigured for better flow, functionality and storage. Likewise the laundry was re-designed to enhance functionality including an ironing station to save space and make the task of ironing work shirts easier. The bathroom was refurbished with a larger bath and larger shower, while a recessed shaving cabinet was added to make up for the lost storage in the reduced size vanity.
Custom joinery was designed to be built in either side of the existing brick fireplace, whilst retaining the original red brick chimney. A neutral materials palette was selected featuring natural, textural finishes, creating a soft, bright yet warm backdrop for the family's furnishings. New window furnishings were incorporated into the living room to help soften the space with diffused light and zone it from the newly installed outdoor decking area. The result was an approachable, fresh and uplifting space for the owner's and their adult children to come home to.
